Riley MacPherson’s family has suffered numerous losses, and the troubled history that seemingly hovers over them all is about to get a lot worse. Leaving behind her stable life in Durham, where she is a school counselor, she takes a leap into the past, returning home to New Bern after her father’s death, to settle up his estate. Recently, in my eighth grade English class, we read To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. During our study of the 1930’s in Alabama we were assigned to read another book by an African American author. I chose A Raisin the Sun because my mom recommended it. Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun written in 1959 is an intriguing, must read play. This play shows the strength of an African-American family’s values and ability to stick together. They face many hard things that shock the reader and the audience including an accidental pregnancy. They battle against harsh prejudice and a system that attempts to keep them from having good opportunities to improve their life. Hansberry does a good job of intertwining family hardships with the individuality of each character. She develops each character personally and carries on his or her traits through out the entire book. The attitude she takes towards the great struggles of a Chicago family, Walter, Ruth, Mama, Beneatha and Travis Younger is convincing because of her tone and description. She shows that life for an African American person at this time is difficult and full of obstacles more challenging than the ones that white people faced. Although A Raisin in the Sun takes place 29 years after To Kill a Mockingbird, African American people are still treated with no respect and are limited in their rights. Both stories constantly demolish African-American families’ dreams. Hansberry illustrates through her tone that the family life is rough and the Youngers’ are eager for a big change. This action in the plot causes excitement and suspense. As a reader I constantly want the Younger family to over come their challenges and do well in the future.
The play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry was awonderful piece of writing. I’m a fourteen year old and I thinkthat the book is good for most ages but you need to be at least 12 to fully understand it. I read this book while reading To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. It was interesting to read those books at the same time to see the points of view of racism of both sides. I noticed something very similar in both books. The Black people are always very welcoming and polite to the white people. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson was always willing to help Mayella Ewell with chores. In A Raisin in the Sun, when the man came from the welcoming committee, they were very polite to him and invited him into their home. Little did they know that they would be rejected even though they were very courteous. That happened in both books. In A Raisin in the Sun, it seemed like their race was holding them back from accomplishing their dreams. When Mama bought the house for her family, they were all brutally rejected by the community. This upset the family very much. Walter says, "Maybe—maybe I’ll just get down on my black knees,Captain Mistuh, Bossman. A-hee-hee-hee! Yasssuh! Great White Father, just gi’ ussen de money, fo’ God’s sake, and we’s ain’t gwine come out deh and dirty up yo’ white folks neighborhood…" When he says this it is a very dramatic part of the play. It shows how white people are controlling so much that goes on. They can’t live in a house they want to live in. It seems like the white people are perceived as some kind of royalty in the book. Like queens and kings, they are not anything special but were just born into the "right" family. Unlike royalty, it’s not the name they inherit but the color of their skin.
Produced in 1959, A RAISIN IN THE SUN was the first Broadway play written by a black woman: Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), a memorable author who based the central story on an incident that occurred in her own family and which eventually evolved into a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 1940 as Hansberry v. Lee.

The play presents us with three generations of the Younger family: the widowed matriarch Lena; her son Walter Lee and daughter Beaneatha; and Walter’s wife Ruth and their son Travis. The family resides in a semi-slum apartment building on the south side of Chicago in the 1950s, where each tries to rise above the difficulties of their enviroment and the many social limitations imposed upon African-Americans at that time. But there is hope on the horizon: Lena is about to receive insurance money from her husband’s death.

Unfortunately, instead of pulling the family together, the money actually drives them apart. Each member lays claim to it in some form or fashion. Lena dreams of owning her own home; daughter Bea is attending medical school and needs money to finish her degree; and most especially Walter Lee dreams of owning a liquior store. Bit by bit the pressure chips away at the family, already strained by years of frustration, and explodes at the play’s climax–although not precisely in a way that one might foresee. When the explosion arrives it does not shatter the family; it unexpectedly reaffirms it.

When I review a play, I like point out that plays are not really intended to be read. They are intended to be seen on stage, where performing artists and designers breathe life into the lines and bring force to the story and its themes. This is true of every play.

I am a professor of Administration of Justice and I teach a course in Community and Human Relations. In the Spring 2014 semester I did a curriculum revision of the entire course and reviewed several textbooks to determine which would be appropriate for my course. I found the Shusta book to be outstanding! The topics covered by this text are very relevant in today’s law enforcement environment. The book is well researched and logically structured making it ideal for all levels of students. Race relations have been the hottest topic in law enforcement over the past year which demonstrates the need for the subject matter covered in this this textbook. A colleague of mine from one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country recently asked me to assist him with developing a course on race relations and I recommended this textbook.

I am in my Master’s program at Lewis University, and I am required to take a class on Multicuturalism to complete my degree. The professor required this book "Multicuturalism in Law Enforcement" (Shusta, and other authors). After just reading the first chapter, I dropped the class, and I wasted $81.00 in buying this ranting book on how Police Officers are racists and have a "Brotherhood" and that we should call it "A Family" instead. This book is politically correct as it will not address Illegal Aliens (And I dont care where they are from) as the true criminals that they are in not entering the US "Legally" – so they are "Undocumented Immigrants" we are a nation of laws – just like all the others – we have laws they have laws. And if you break the law – you are a criminal as in other countries – like Mexico and Canada. The authors have quotes without having sources. It is implied that the white man is the root of most of the racism and when they offer certain groups that are discriminated against – the white man is not on the list – I have been discriminated against as a white man / police officer. And if you are to believe their premises – all police officer are racists and practice it everyday while on duty. Terriblly written, repetitive throughout, and very very liberally focused. Do not waste your money on this book – unless you own a parrot and need the pages for their droppings. I will now have to find a class to replace this one – I do it on principle alone – I will not drink this koolaid garbage.

I am a professor of Administration of Justice and I teach a course in Community and Human Relations. In the Spring 2014 semester I did a curriculum revision of the entire course and reviewed several textbooks to determine which would be appropriate for my course. I found the Shusta book to be outstanding! The topics covered by this text are very relevant in today’s law enforcement environment. The book is well researched and logically structured making it ideal for all levels of students. Race relations have been the hottest topic in law enforcement over the past year which demonstrates the need for the subject matter covered in this this textbook. A colleague of mine from one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country recently asked me to assist him with developing a course on race relations and I recommended this textbook.

I am in my Master’s program at Lewis University, and I am required to take a class on Multicuturalism to complete my degree. The professor required this book "Multicuturalism in Law Enforcement" (Shusta, and other authors). After just reading the first chapter, I dropped the class, and I wasted $81.00 in buying this ranting book on how Police Officers are racists and have a "Brotherhood" and that we should call it "A Family" instead. This book is politically correct as it will not address Illegal Aliens (And I dont care where they are from) as the true criminals that they are in not entering the US "Legally" – so they are "Undocumented Immigrants" we are a nation of laws – just like all the others – we have laws they have laws. And if you break the law – you are a criminal as in other countries – like Mexico and Canada. The authors have quotes without having sources. It is implied that the white man is the root of most of the racism and when they offer certain groups that are discriminated against – the white man is not on the list – I have been discriminated against as a white man / police officer. And if you are to believe their premises – all police officer are racists and practice it everyday while on duty. Terriblly written, repetitive throughout, and very very liberally focused. Do not waste your money on this book – unless you own a parrot and need the pages for their droppings. I will now have to find a class to replace this one – I do it on principle alone – I will not drink this koolaid garbage.

On Page 2 of the introduction, Dr. Farrall says she intends Reading Assessment Linking Language, Lieracy, and Cognition to be a graduate level text for a course in reading assessment or reading assessment. Reading the book makes me want to take her course.

I have been teaching reading for 25 years (out of my 35-year working life so far) — and this is probably the best book I have seen on reading. Unlike many college texts, this one clearly defines terms that would have been learned in a prerequisite course before she uses them. It reviews the history of development of whatever Dr. Farrall wants to discuss, placing things in a life-context. Dr. Farrall even dares to include humorous comments, rare in college books I have used. The end result is a useful book that is enjoyable to read.

While this book would be an excellent foundation for a course, it is also a good reference for educators because of its excellent indexing and its extensive list of additional references.

Melissa Lee Farrell has written a comprehensive book on reading assessment which even includes many great research-based ideas, suggestions, and strategies as well as, some commen sense advice like, "Never proof when you are tired." Nice to see common sense included in an academically oriented text.

PROS – The book is organized from introduction and reading theory and stages to areas that include linguistic and cultural diversity – those in charge of standardized tests would do well to note the section that indicates that academic proficiency in a second language may take 4-7 years – not the one year given currently for ESL test takers and their hard-working teachers. The book also includes statistics and test development, the role of intellectual assessment, underlying processes, etc. As you read, the book hits many of the current topics in reading assessment today, including responses to intervention and mastery and automaticity. Anyone involved in teaching reading and assessing reading will find guidance in this book that will help deepen their knowledge and help shape their instructional approach.

Cons – So why not five stars? It is a five-star text but it is dense and as said, comprehensive (like a college text for a course on reading) and most teachers have such limited time as it is, that makes getting to all the reading of this text and everything else they must do, that much harder.

It would be great if administrators purchased this book for their staff and used it for professional development sessions or if reading coaches could introduce the sections related to specific staff needs so that it gets utilized and/or implemented that much sooner. That’s not to say that individual teachers shouldn’t have their own copy, just that individual teachers would benefit from institutional support of this book.

Overall, I think is a nice comprehensive book. I like the author’s integrated approach that explores the complex components of reading and tries to tie them together. The instructions to the people administering the tests she described are important and well thought out. I understand the criticism that other reviewers gave about the old resources, but I found it well researched; I think the issue lies in the fact that the tests that schools use are quite old so she cites the research related to that, but I also felts she included plenty of more recent research and literature in her resources section.

Overall, a good comprehensive book that is useful for someone who is working and doing reading assessment and coaching with children.
